Majora Carter: Greening the Ghetto

Race and Class will largely effect your proximity to power plants and waste facilities as opposed to parks and outdoor venues.

Blacks and Hispanics are twice as likely to live in areas where air quality is a factor in the communities leading causes of death and five times as likely to live near a power plant or waste facility.

"Banks would red line areas of the city determining where investment would stop, landlords would torch their own building to collect insurance."

"My brother served in Vietnam only two be shot down two blocks from my house."

"The New Yankee stadium is being built in an area where most people do drive, parks have been destroyed in order to pave way for parking."

Bogata: Realizing the majority of people do not drive yet an enourmous amount of public planning was designed with the automobile industry in mind the mayor decided to make changes. He reduced 5 lane highways to 3, creating walking and bike paths, increased funding for public parks while investing in public transportation. His efforts led to decreased litter and crime rates, "the streets came alive with people." The mayor was almost impeached.
